Giants’ roster almost set

The Giants made nine roster moves Friday, just about setting their opening day roster.

Players optioned to the minors on Friday were pitchers Alex Hinshaw, Kevin Pucetas and Henry Sosa, catcher Buster Posey, infielders Ryan Rohlinger and Matt Downs. All of these players were sent to Triple-A Fresno. The Giants also reassigned non-roster invitees P Felix Romero, SS Brandon Crawford and C Steve Holm to the minors.

That cut the roster to 29 players, but that includes three players expected to open the season on the DL — 2B Freddy Sanchez, IF Emmanuel Burriss and OF Fred Lewis.

The decision on the final roster spot is between pitchers Guillermo Mota and Denny Bautista.

Beyond that, he’s the opening day roster

First of Giants’ spring cuts

The San Francisco Giants made the first cuts of the spring, sending 1B Brett Pill to Triple-A Fresno, and reassigning SS Ehire Adrianza, OFThomas Neal, OF Wendell Fairley, C Johnny Monell, C Hector Sanchez, C Jackson Williams and IF Nick Noonan to minor league camp.

It’s curious that none of these moves involved pitchers. So, we would guess that a second round of cuts likely will be coming Wednesday.
In another move Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles returned pitcher Steve Johnson to the Giants. Johnson was a Rule 5 draft pick in December by the Orioles. Johnson was assigned to Bowie of the Eastern League.
